History of Voss Insurance Services

Voss Insurance Services, Inc. was organized in 1991 by Jack Voss. Jack began his insurance career in 1979 with an independent insurance agency based in Jackson, Michigan.

In 1982, he started a branch office of that agency in Lansing, Michigan and then purchased the branch office in 1991, forming Voss Insurance Services, Inc. The focus of the agency was commercial property and liability insurance for select industry groups including nursing homes, manufacturing companies, non-profit organizations and public schools. In 1992, Scott Voss joined his father in the agency. Together, they continued to develop the specialty niches of the agency, expanding into assisted living facilities, independent retirement homes, allied healthcare services, and other non-healthcare industries including auto services, retail/wholesale companies and select contractors.

Today, Voss Insurance Services is an industry leader in providing insurance and risk management services to a large number of long-term care facilities throughout the state of Michigan (upper and lower peninsula). Other industry segments have also grown steadily over the years including manufacturing, retail and service sectors. Commercial property and liability insurance remains the mainstay of the agency making up over 99% of all premiums.

In 2005, Voss Financial Group, LLC was formed as a sister company to provide individual and group benefits including health, life, disability, pension plans, and financial planning and investment services primarily to the existing customers of Voss Insurance Services, Inc. Voss Financial Group, LLC is a partnership between Voss Insurance Services, Inc. and Wayne VanDerKolk. Wayne brings an extensive background of experience and expertise in employee benefits and financial services and serves as the managing partner of Voss Financial Group, LLC.

January 1, 2007, Scott Voss purchased the agency from Jack, thus completing the agency succession plan the two had put in place in 2002. Scott assumed the role of President and took over responsibility for the daily operations of the agency. Jack assumed the role of CEO and took responsibility for the long-term vision of the agency.
